The History of Hoodies: From Workwear to Streetwear Icon

The hoodie is one of the most powerful fashion pieces in modern clothing. Simple, comfortable, and easy to wear, it has travelled from the workplace to the runway, from sports fields to street culture, and from everyday casual wear to global fashion.

The hoodie’s story began in the early 20th century. It was first designed as practical clothing for workers who needed warmth while working in cold warehouses, outdoor spaces, and freezing conditions. The hood offered protection from wind and rain, while the soft sweatshirt fabric made it comfortable for long hours of labour.

By the 1930s, sportswear brands began producing hooded sweatshirts for athletes. Boxers, runners, and university teams wore hoodies for training because they were warm, flexible, and easy to move in. From there, the hoodie became connected to youth culture, college life, and athletic style.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the hoodie stepped into a new world. Hip-hop culture, breakdancing, skateboarding, and street art helped turn it into a symbol of self-expression. It became more than clothing; it became attitude. The hoodie said, “I am comfortable, I am bold, I am myself.”

By the 1990s and 2000s, hoodies became a major part of streetwear fashion. Luxury brands, designers, music artists, and sports labels all embraced the hoodie. It could be worn oversized, cropped, printed, plain, zipped, or layered. Its beauty lies in its freedom.

Today, the hoodie is for everyone. Men, women, students, creatives, travellers, athletes, and fashion lovers all wear it. It is comfort with confidence. It is streetwear with soul. Whether dressed up with a coat or worn casually with jeans, the hoodie remains a timeless piece — warm, stylish, and unapologetically modern.
